Early preview of the Soviet Skirmish map 'Khutor' on Prototype server

UPDATE 24th of January 2018: The Khutor map will be on the Prototype server a few more days - at least throughout the weekend.

On our prototype server you will now find a very early preview of the Soviet Skirmish map called 'Khutor', that we have in development.

Please note that this is a preview, so you get a chance to see what we're working on, and not a public test as such. This means that you should expect that a lot of things are not final yet - textures and collision might be missing on objects and there will probably be occasional crashes and other oddities. If you find that something is broken and you can't play on the prototype server, then come back at a later point and see if we have fixed the issue. No need to contact support or similar. This is simply the premise of you having access to try stuff directly in our development environment.

The 'Khutor' map will be on the Prototype server until Wednesday the 24th of January.

How do I try it?

In order to try the early preview of the Soviet Skirmish map, you will have to download the Prototype client.

You can download the client by surfing to http://prototype.heroesandgenerals.com

Download and install the client as indicated.

When starting,  select 'Click here to skip combat and go directly to the overview screen'

Skip FTUE Prototype test.jpg

Deselect everything except the "Khutor" Skirmish map in the matchmaker filter and press "TO BATTLE!"

Spoiler

KhutorMatchmakerFilter.jpg

NOTE! In order to enter a battle there need to be at least one opponent, so if you are waiting for a battle to start, then it might be a good idea to pull in a friend to play against.

Known Login issue

If you have never before logged in on the prototype server you might see an error when logging in. Close the game client, restart it and log in again to fix.

You will have more than enough Gold for playing around on the prototype server, but please note that any gold, credits or warfunds are not transferred to the Live servers.

What is new?

The Khutor map has been on the prototype server as preview with mocked up assets a while ago. The version you saw last time was with old/mockup assets and terrain that were mocked up and not suitable to be released.

The assets (buildings, etc) is the largest part of making the Soviet maps. We are building everything in "modules", so we can reuse walls, doors, windows, etc. For the French terrain and the Mountain terrain we already have a bunch of modules. On the Soviet asset side we're building a ton of new modules for houses, the church, the fortress, etc, plus we're making a proper new terrain with the right properties, etc. All of these assets and the terrain are being built so they fit our new pipelines and so they perform well when we release them.

We actually had to start over with the production of the assets and the terrain for this and the other Soviet terrain maps - this work includes making a new pipeline for building the terrain, making a new pipeline for building assets, moving out of XSI to Maya (the 3d software we use for creating assets), making a new render/shader pipeline as well as making a new texture pipeline.

So a lot of the work has been "behind the scenes" and was needed in order to improve our pipelines - and we're not done with our pipeline changes yet.

We hope this gives you a bit of insight in why things now look different than what you saw last time Khutor was on the prototype server - and again - when you get to peek directly into things in development you get to see things that may appear (and may be) broken and weird looking. Sometimes it is trivial things that need to be done in order to make things look more polished (like light settings, tweaking the number that adjusts grass or tree density, etc) and sometimes it is not as trivial. But no matter what - you will get to see things that doesn't look final.

We are aware of the risk of showing work in progress - it might cause concerns among you guys etc., but as a part of Operation Glasnost, we have decided to do this - to show you our dirty underwear, even though it is also 'painful' for us to show something that is not polished yet. But we believe it is worth it as we believe that you guys will understand and together we can move forward, developers and players as one.

FAQ

Q: How do I access the prototype server on Steam, Mail.Ru, or Hype?

A: Unfortunately, Prototype is only accessible through the standalone client. But you can use the same login, so you only need to download the stand-alone client.

Q: Why is the downloading of the client progressing so slow?

A: During the initial opening of the server, there is a heavy load on download centers.

Q: Does this impact my normal game?

A: No, You have a separate amount of credits, gold & warfunds as well as separate characters, weapons, vehicles etc. on the prototype server!

Q: Do I get the Gold, Warfunds and Credits back in the normal game?

A: No, the free gold, and all resources stays on the prototype server.

Q: Am I allowed to have fun?

A: YES! While this is a preview it is also a game, so go have some fun! Check out other vehicles, factions and careers from what you normally play. And play, play to win each battle using the entire huge arsenal the game provides!

Q: What if something breaks on the server or the client crashes?

A: Well, this is a preview of a map currently in development, so it should be expected that a lot of things are not final yet - textures and collision might be missing on objects and there will probably be occasional crashes and other oddities. If you find that something is broken and you can't play on the prototype server, then come back at a later point and see if we have fixed the issue. No need to contact support or similar. This is simply the premise of giving you access to try stuff in our development environment.

Fun map! It's a prototype indeed, with red grass, missing bridge textures and invisible building walls, but it seems to be fun!

The church was closed sadly.

But together with help of my one enemy soldier, @H1TMaN, we managed to get inside. :P

Spoiler: it's almost entirely white inside the church and you can walk through everything, including stairs. The only way out is death...

did you also add tractors? We cant play a soviet map without tractors.

Yep! Tractors can be found in the map, in fact we used one to climb on the roof of the church.

I can't believe it takes 1. 5 years to make assets!!!  o.O

they actually explained it in the last qnany a bit.

The short run down is reto uses a discontinued software for creating assets, this does not help with the process of outsourcing it.

On the other hand they look into a new option and also many retos do help out creating assets whenever they have time for it.

here that relevant question from the stream

Could you guys at Retro maybe start a Map making competition, that the community takes part in? And if you approve the maps, they will be added to the game?

summary: maps or map designs? Currently this is not supported internally, maybe in the far far far future, Reto.Desji uses the forums to gather feedback early in the design process. They talked a lot about map making in the past, currently they have a problem with their outsourcing since their art package was discontinued, they work on updating it. In that process it may be possible that players can contribute this stuff. A full flegded level editor is not what will happen. Competition would have a lot of different ressource allocation, even with an off the shelve engine and not retox.

Thanks for letting me climb around on your Panther to get a better look Jacky, Lol.

Definitely looks like it'll be a fun map over all. I like the new assets. Can't tell too much until it's to a more completed state.
