Half the battle news blogs - Why are they that hard to find?

Recommended Posts

Marv2.0    382

Reading how new players have struggles here and there and everywhere on the forums I ask myself why Reto.Gargamel's Half the battle: news posts are not featured in the game?

I know some of the stuff changed but still most of it is up to date. (Regarding flanking and so on)

Reto probably could make an how to get started post. (Which also links to the existing posts.) I find that the Half the battle posts by Gargamel are still good summaries of the topics they cover.

Surprisingly the index page on the wiki is empty, another problem which makes it harder for new players to find this information. EDIT: Props to flint solving this issue.

I'm asking myself was it worth the time creating this posts when they now just catch dust? No new players know about them. There are no tutorials, this is probably the closest it can get for any new player and not even these are featured.

Half the battle posts

https://heroesandgenerals.com/?p=16848/half-the-battle-finding-friends this one needs update img of chat symbol

https://heroesandgenerals.com/?p=15418/half-the-battle-managing-equipmentalso needs an update on the images I guess, some of the equipment system changed most noteable panzerschreck, and possibility to buy all factions AT gear once unlocked

https://heroesandgenerals.com/?p=14956/half-the-battle-quick-capture-with-motorized-infantry

[ /spoiler ]

I believe I got all of these posts in the spoiler, and most of this is still right up to date(because some game mechanics probably will never change). If Gargamel finds some time now and again it would be awesome if he would cover these things:

*Getting started (as we I mentioned newbies in the beginning,)

*Modifying weapons

*Encounter gamemode (not the map, maybe we get more just the gamemode itself)

*Skirmish gamemode

*Assault gamemode Attacker

*Assault gamemode Defender

*Mobile AA-tactics

*capturing a point (neutralize, capture, area control AND holding the ground you gained)

Can't find any more important stuff...

Also as these exist already mention them on the dev-streams reto.

Reto.Robotron3000 Addition:

You can also use the category to find them: https://heroesandgenerals.com/category/half-the-battle/

http://www.heroesandgenerals.com/commun ... ter-tanker

I think all the noob tankers that drive away from their team, sit on a kill, and spam HE (giving a huge tracer every few seconds) towards a small infantry target 600 metres away, then complain when they die that they have no infantry support, can really learn from this one.

Also one thing needs to be added to this tank one: Use co-axial for shorter ranges against infantry! Stop wasting several seconds by changing your shell from AP(CR) to HE, vital seconds that that enemy infantry is running towards you with AT grenades already in hand.

+1 to OP.

well yes of course they need some polishing up, and updating on stuff that changed, however the more general information is still true. Especially things like flanking, giving buddies a ride, using the map to coordinate with the team etc.

Great find Marv, and well done getting the links all together.

I've now added links to all of the articles (in date order) on the Half The Battle wiki index page (that Gargamel referred to in at least one of the articles):

http://heroesandgenerals.gamepedia.com/ ... blog_index

Unfortunately, the main page of the wiki is actually locked and presumably can only be edited by Reto (I'm guessing), this means I have no way of adding a link to the Half the battle index on the main page so that the articles would be more readily accessible.

Also, there actually are a bunch of tutorials/guides on the wiki already, these are:

First Blood Tutorial - http://heroesandgenerals.gamepedia.com/First_Blood

Getting Started - http://heroesandgenerals.gamepedia.com/Getting_Started

Heroes War School - http://heroesandgenerals.gamepedia.com/ ... War_School

Playing As Tanker - http://heroesandgenerals.gamepedia.com/ ... _as_Tanker

Flight Manual - http://heroesandgenerals.gamepedia.com/Flight_Manual

Paratroopers Handbook - http://heroesandgenerals.gamepedia.com/ ... s_Handbook

Recon Tips - http://heroesandgenerals.gamepedia.com/Recon_tips

As with Gargamels posts, these guides are most likely all in need of at least some updating and/or polishing because of changes made to the game since they were written.

Yeah definitly needs some updating and so on. As said already. Thanks for updating the wiki page I updated the opening post.

Now I think I added in the opening a few this needs an update notes. Still I'll read through them some time today and see what definitly is out of date.

And I still believe that if reto picks up on these again, that they should implement and promote them ingame.

E.g.

A new player logs into the game the first time Following message pops up:

Do you want to read through the getting started guide?

Yes

Let me play already god dam it!

If player chooses option two inform him where he can get to that guide and the list of all guides actually. Implement a new button in top right corner that also old players can access.

Actually I'm interested how many of the old players forgot about them already, and how many of the new players knew about them. I for one forget about these until I was digging up images for you flint ;)

In addition to the new player pop-up you mentioned, perhaps it'd be worth having a link to the front page of the wiki somewhere on the main game-client screen for ease of access at any time, perhaps it could go up in the top right corner next to the settings and other buttons?

Also, a couple of things did occur to me yesterday when I was fixing the index page:

1. Now that we have a usable 'HTB' index page with a chronological list of links to all of the original blog articles, if it turns out they are (mostly/all) in need of some serious updating would it be worth converting each article into its own wiki page and then adjusting the 'HTB' index page to link to each updated article rather than the original versions?

For this conversion all we would need is the plain (updated) text for each article and suitable up-to-date images wherever necessary. Once we have all that, creating the various pages should then be pretty straight-forward. And after that we'd just need Reto to create a link to the index page on the main wiki page for us.

And obviously we'd have to credit Gargamel for the original articles, and you/whoever else for updating them.

2. It's possible some of the information in Gargamels blog posts may actually have been used in the creation of the various tips & guide pages already listed on the wiki. Or failing that there may simply be an amount of information overlap between both sets of articles. It'll probably be well worth comparing the blog articles and the guides to see if this is the case or not.

And if this does turn out to be the case, it might actually be easier to simply leave the 'HTB' index page as it is now, and simply work out what bits of the blogs overlap the guides and then see if there's enough unused blog information left over to create one or more additional guides.

Definitly why not. Would be an awesome shortcut for sure.

Also, a couple of things did occur to me yesterday when I was fixing the index page:

Yeah have been looking through the posts, images well if they don't show something crucial can be 5 years old. Have added what needs to be done to the posts (except for 4 all are in need of minor or major changes)

Well I do believe that reto would reach a bigger part of the community just going on posting them in the news feed. But I guess it wouldn't hurt to also have them in the wiki. You know even if it would be linked properly, the wiki is just a place players only go to search specific information, unlikely they search for gameplay tactics there. (at least that's how I did it in my times of playing)

2. It's possible some of the information in Gargamels blog posts may actually have been used in the creation of the various tips & guide pages already listed on the wiki. Well that very certainly can be the case, and I do not know what is on the wiki, but my best bet for definitly not mentioned in detail on the wiki is how to use the map to forward information to your team ;)

Furthermore additionaly to my point above (that on the news feed reto reaches more players) I somehow like Gargamel's style of writting, when he created these posts. I started to read bits of the getting started page on the wiki and was like: this is sooo dry.

Some good news and bad news Marv:

Bad news: Thus far I haven't been able to get the 'HTB blog' index page linked to on the front page of the wiki. :(

Good news: With Astrolites help, the link to the 'HTB blog' index page is now listed in the new sticky thread at the top of the General Dev. Feedback board here on the forum. :D

HTB that's a nice abbreviation.

Well this is awesome. Slow and steady wins the race.

Now if we could get gargamel to start looking over these again. And writing more of them that would be awesome. I will drop him a PM on that matter.

EDIT: apparantly he disabled PM on forums...

Saw this and have gotten the idea to make a similar sort of thing in video format. Gona try to pump the first one out on Sunday and have weekly ones after that.

How far are you with that?

Yes I bumped the thread, but mainly because I'd like to know if reto will ever pick up again on these entries or not. Gargamel knows how to write these. (although currently he drowns in support tickets or something i have heard, maybe kraken can take over?)

To be fair to Gargamel I can't really imagine him having the free time necessary to maintain a regular blog like HTB anymore, but that having been said there are plenty of other Retos out there that apparently still regularly play this game, so perhaps they could each take a turn, e.g. once a fortnight, to write an article for the HTB Blog about some particular element of the game.

Unfortunately, the main page of the wiki is actually locked and presumably can only be edited by Reto (I'm guessing), this means I have no way of adding a link to the Half the battle index on the main page so that the articles would be more readily accessible.

No It is locked so only those with admin powers can edit the main page - because it is (or at least was) a big target for spam and malicious edits.

Who did you contact? This thread would have had a far better response if it had been posted in the Wiki section of the forum.

On another note - the "Getting started guide" or HNG 101 is currently undergoing a complete update by an external team.

Moved to Wiki section.

I kinda guessed that was the situation with the main page, I can totally appreciate why it would need to be locked down like that.

Which is good and all, but perhaps it would be (more) useful if the wiki, and specifically the game guides therein, were available as a link somewhere within the client after the player has logged in?

Ironically enough Dave, as well as suggesting to Astrolite to include a link to the HTB Blog index page in the 'Common FAQs' sticky thread here on the forum, which he very kindly did add, I actually also tried to contact yourself through the wiki (because I knew you were an admin on there) about the possibility of getting a link to the blog index added to the front page of the wiki too.

And I'm glad to hear about the guide(s) getting an update, will be interesting to see how it/they turn out.

Ugh it's right there from 5 months ago - in my comment archive...

Haven't been very active on it this year - bar the past week or so.

Well it is linked on main page now under guides - It has always been on the main page but was found under the "Gameplay" to the left of the featured videos and pictures - but now hopefully easier to see.

No worries, thanks for adding the extra link Dave, hopefully that will make the blog a lot more accessible.

Now we just need Gargamel and/or some of the other Retos to start writing for the blog again...

:)

Gonna be honest after this thread died I forgot about it and was quite inactive on the youtubes.

HOWEVER

I am trying to reboot the channel and this will be a great addition to the planned content stream.

Just got a new editing software, was holding off on making them (again) until I could make them decent.

I'm thinking in a week for the first one.
